  1. This was fun! I missed #’s 7 and 8. For bonus points mix up the words to make new noirs: Perilous Lady, Among the Crooked, The Breaking Sidewalk…

  2. I loved the concept of this post, but it exposed some serious deficiencies in my film noir diet. Which picture should I gobble up next:

    Shield for Murder
    Private Hell 36
    Experiment Perilous
    Shadow on the Wall
    The Reckless Moment
    Appointment with Danger
    Among the Living

    • For sure Shield for Murder — it’s my favorite among those you listed. And it’s on YouTube. (At least it used to be — for the second time I went on YouTube today to find that a movie that used to be free is now only available to buy or rent.) And Private Hell 36 is another favorite of mine — Ida Lupino. You simply cannot go wrong.

      • “..,for the second time I went on YouTube today to find that a movie that used to be free is now only available to buy or rent.”

And this is why I will never stop loving physical media. YouTube has broken my heart too many times, lulling me into a false sense of security only to take away comfort content like old school E! True Hollywood Story videos, Mysteries and Scandals, and classic film star A&E Biographies.

(Both of your recs are happily available… for now! Thank you for weighing in!!)

    • I second Karen’s recommends plus if you’d like something of the Gaslight ilk then Experiment Perilous, some very cool effects in that too.

  3. So I just watched SHIELD FOR DANGER and y’all didn’t prepare me for a platinum blonde Morticia Addams!

Damn, that was a brass-knuckled picture. The closing line — “Write his story good” — was the perfect epigraph for both the Edmond O’Brien’s character and the film itself.

Thanks so much for the rec. It didn’t disappoint.
