Day Twenty-One of Noirvember: Quote of the Day

“She was a charming, middle-aged lady with a face like a bucket of mud. I gave her a drink. She was a gal who’d take a drink if she had to knock you down to get to the bottle.” Dick Powell in Murder, My Sweet (1944).

  1. She was perfect in that role. 🙂

  2. Esther tidied up very nicely, but that line always comes to mind first and always makes me smile.

PS: I seem to be reaching the age where it could be used for me. I seem to have skipped the long hoped for Vivian Rutledge phase.

    • LOL! Paddy, you crack me up. Incidentally, I remember the first (only?) movie in which I saw Esther Howard in her younger days — The Palm Beach Story. I could hardly believe my eyes!

  3. If I remember correctly she also had a wonderful part in ‘Born to Kill’.

  4. Terrific line. Esther is so convincing in the drunk scene in this.
